FIFA Changes It’s Mind On Poppies
Well, maybe pigs aren’t yet flying but they might as well be – after all the claims and protests that wearing a poppy was somehow contravening FIFA’s rules concerning political, moral and commercial motifs, they saw some sense and a sort of compromise emerged where the England team will wear poppies on their black armbands during the match. Representations were made by Prince William and David Cameron but it seems that a bit of chat and some common sense sorted the issue out.
Perhaps more surprising is FIFA actually allowing the the Football Association of England and Wales to get one over on them. Absolute hatred of anything British must be driving Sepp Blatter forward at the moment, particularly as he is being forced to introduce some long awaited reforms and transparency into the questionable procedures he has presided over since his Presidency began in 1998.
The FA are not completely blameless in this matter; they’ve never tried to use poppies on the England shirt before, although the occasion is always marked with a minutes silence. It smacks slightly of jumping on the poppy bandwagon and the increased likelihood of being vilified if you don’t, but what the hell, it raises money for an extremely deserving cause.
The FA Cup Is Back
The world’s oldest domestic cup competition kicks off tomorrow but of course the non-league clubs will know it’s been back for a while. The FA Cup starts with six qualifying rounds to weed out some of the really small teams in the football league pyramid and the round following that – the first round proper – introduces the big teams.
An amazing 763 teams were eligible to enter the FA Cup competition this year and there are a few notable small teams still left in the tournament. Essex club Redbridge FC are the club from the lowest league still left; they play in the Isthmian Division One North, the eighth tier of the football league, comparable with the Southern League and the Northern Premier League. They will actually play Oxford City, another non-league team from the Southern Premier League and a home draw for Redbridge will give them some encouragement that they can progress to the next round.
Nantwich Town from the Northern Premier Division are also involved and neutrals everywhere will be hoping they can knock out the MK Dons franchise. There’s a few more all non-league ties to look forward to, meaning that the second round will see at least four non-league teams feature. Those matches are as follows:
- Cambridge United vs Wrexham (both Blue Square Bet league members)
- AFC Totton (Southern League Premier) vs Bradford Park Avenue (Northern Premier League)
- Salisbury City vs Arlesley Town (both Souther League Premier)
So good luck to all those teams and I’ll consider making the long, long round trip to Crewe Alexandra to see how my team can progress. Have a good weekend wherever you end up!
